One of the main objectives of any geriatric housing
facility is to provide for the protection of their residents and staff.
Therefore, it is imperative that the facility can control who enters the
facility and at what time they may enter. Obviously, the classic lock and key
method provides a basic level of protection. However, this method provides for
no record of who entered the building at a given time nor does it prevent
anyone with a key from entering the building at anytime. When keys are lost, to
provide building security, it may become necessary to change all of the locks
and keys in the building. |
Modern computer based electronic Access Control
Systems allow facilities to design the traffic flow of visitors, staff, and
residents through particular doors at specific times of the day. These systems
incorporate the use of a proximity reader and accompanying card or key fob. In
the event of the loss of this item, all the facility owner has to do is go into
the software that is responsible for managing the system, delete the radio
identity of the proximity card / key fob from the system, and reissue a new
card / key fob to the person. If anyone should find the lost card / key fob, it
would no longer be recognized by the system, therefore maintaining the security
of the facility with very little effort and time output. Another advantage is the money saved on
re-keying all the locks in the facility. Access Control Systems also records all activity of the
system and store it in a data base allowing reports to be configured and
generated so management can review any activity in the system. Along with
preventing unauthorized entry and exit from a building, Access Control Systems
have been shown to be very helpful in preventing the loss of expensive
inventory items.
